The Xbox is number one in the UK (pic: Microsoft)
The best-selling console of the year so far is perhaps not what you might imagine, with the PS5 being pushed into third place.
As usual there are no actual sales figures but chart tracker GfK has revealed the basic details to GamesIndustry.biz, including the fact that console sales were up 148% compared to January 2020.
We do know though that over 150,000 consoles were sold in total during January, with sales of the Switch up by 21% on the same time last year.
The information doesn’t necessarily imply that that the Xbox Series X/S was more popular than the PlayStation 5, but simply that it was easier for people to get hold of.
Since launch, the Xbox Series X has been just as rare as the PlayStation 5 but the cheaper and less powerful Xbox Series S does come back into stock, at least for brief periods, on a fairly regular basis.
Even so, the PlayStation 5 was apparently only ‘narrowly’ in third place and all next gen consoles are selling out almost the moment they hit retail – as is the Switch in many cases.

4. Just Dance 2021 (NS/PS4/XO/PS5)
5. Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (PS4/XO/PS5/XSX)

10. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (PS4/XO/PS5)
According to GfK 941,672 boxed games were sold in the UK in January, an increase of 7% on the same time last year (an impressive figure given the constant rise of digital sales).
But while Nintendo had to settle for second place in terms of console sales it took the top two places in terms of game sales, with two other Switch exclusives in the top 10.
