Battlefield 2042 is already one of the top selling games on Steam (pic: EA)
Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 are among Steam’s most successful games of 2021, although the former seems to be more popular.
With 2021 drawing to a close, Valve has put together its yearly round-up of which games on Steam have been the most successful over the last 12 months.
In terms of completely new releases, however, Battlefield 2042 appears to be top dog. This is despite user reviews still being overwhelmingly negative, as players have grown disillusioned with the game since its launch.
It’s impossible to tell how much of its revenue comes from launch sales, but it’s clearly made an impressive amount, especially since it only released last month. It even still made it on the overall top sellers list.
While it did well financially, it’s noticeably not particularly high on the most played list, which charts games by their highest peak concurrent players. Although Battlefield 2042 did manage to break more than 100,000 concurrent players, this was at launch and Steam Charts shows that the average amount of players has dropped significantly since then.
By comparison, Halo Infinite, another multiplayer shooter that released in November has fared much better. It joins Battlefield 2042 among the top sellers on the new releases lists but had more than 200,000 concurrent players at launch.
Admittedly, Halo Infinite barely broke into the top 40 on the overall top sellers list and it hasn’t been safe from criticism either. However, user reviews are overall far more positive than those for Battlefield 2042. Plus, unlike Battlefield 2042, it offers a single-player campaign mode.
Generally, Steam’s top games consist mostly of dedicated multiplayer games, such as New World and Valheim. But a few single-player games managed to break into the top 10 for new releases, including Resident Evil Village and Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.
You can see the full results yourself over on Steam.
