Ninja no longer holds the record for the greatest number of viewers on Twitch, as TheGrefg beats him by almost four times the number.
Ninja might still be the most famous streamer from a mainstream perspective, but he no longer holds the record for the most viewers at once on Twitch, after being soundly beaten by Spaniard David ‘TheGrefg’ Martínez.
Ninja’s record is 635,000 concurrent viewers and that took a battle royale match with Drake to reach. Last night though, TheGrefg saw his channel hit a staggering 2.4 million viewers at its peak.
Since TheGrefg streams in Spanish he’s not well known amongst many English speakers, but his success clearly demonstrates that that’s no impediment to success.
The excitement last night was as a result of him getting his own skin in Fortnite, one of only four famous streamers to do so – the others being Ninja, Lachlan, and Loserfruit.
TheGrefg had already beaten Ninja’s record once before, by a much smaller margin, so he’s no flash in the pan. Although whether he or anyone else can break the new record any time soon remains to be seen, as it’s so very much higher than anything before it.
So far, almost all of Twitch’s most popular streamers have performed in English but TheGrefg’s success will certainly encourage other Spanish speakers and likely other non-anglophones.
Although clearly, having your own Fortnite skin doesn’t hurt when it comes to breaking records. As indeed does the record itself, with many of the viewers last night tuning in on only after the stream broke the 1 million mark and everyone realised history was being made.
