Just hours after Lucasfilm Games rose from the grave they’ve already announced a new Indiana Jones game from the makers of Wolfenstein.
The announcement is extra surprising because the game is being made by MachineGames, creators of Wolfenstein: The New Order and subsidiary of Bethesda – which itself is now owned by Microsoft.
There’s no suggestion that the new game is going to be an Xbox console exclusive, but no promise that it won’t be either. Although to be fair, at this stage, the details are all very thin on the ground.
The game was announced via a couple of tweets, with a short (barely) animated teaser that basically gives nothing away, beyond a couple of aeroplane tickets to Rome.
Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard will be executive producer, which some will consider a good thing and others not.
The game is described as having an original story, which implies it’s not based on any existing film (or the new one that’s coming out) or any of the previous games.
Although there’s never been a particularly good action game based on Dr Jones, Jr. there were two excellent graphic adventures, with one based on The Last Crusade and the entirely original Fate Of Atlantis – which remains one of Lucasfilm’s best games and a significantly better Indiana Jones story than the fourth film.
We’re big fans of MachineGames but everything they’ve ever done, going back to when the majority of the team were at Starbreeze working on games like The Chronicles Of Riddick and The Darkness, have been first person shooters with quasi-open world elements.
That doesn’t seem a particularly good fit for Indy but we’ll have to wait and see what they’ve got planned. If nothing else they’re one of the best storytellers today when it comes to action games and that certainly does seem a good fit.
There’s not word of a release date, with Bethesda warning that, ‘It’ll be some time before we have more to reveal’.
