And the current boss of Al-Sadd could now get his opportunity after manager Ronald Koeman was sacked late on Wednesday night.
The Dutchman watched on as his side were beaten 1-0 by Rayo Vallecano, a result which ended his 14-month tenure at the club.
And the LaLiga outfit are thought to be lining up Xavi for the top job as they look to turn around their woeful start to the campaign.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has said: “Barcelona board started contacts with Xavi weeks ago.
“Talks will continue today [Thursday] to check the situation with Al-Sadd and resolve issues.
“Announcement not imminent yet – process just started. Xavi wants Barça job.”
Barcelona currently sit ninth in the LaLiga table and have also lost two of their three Champions League games so far this season.
Fans of the Catalan giants will be hoping Xavi can bring the glory days back to the Nou Camp, a period he was instrumental in during his time as a player.
The Spaniard won eight league titles with the club, seven of which came alongside Messi.
He also won the Champions League on four occasions as well as three Copa del Reys and six Spanish Super Cups.
Meanwhile, Messi announced himself in a PSG kit with a sensational goal against Manchester City last month.
So far, the Argentine has netted three goals in seven games for Mauricio Pochettino’s outfit.
