The one-off show is called Teens In Crisis and will see Joe spend time with youngsters in care, a subject close to his heart as his mother, Catherine, is a foster mum.
A TV insider said: “The BBC love Joe’s everyman appeal and believe he can attract a type of audience who wouldn’t usually tune in for a documentary.
“He’s keen to add another string to his bow, and the topic is something he’s familiar with, so it’s a good fit.
“There’s huge scope for Joe to make more series in the future, so it’s exciting times for him.”
Joe’s mother has fostered two children over the years and he’ll be exploring what it’s like for frontline workers who are helping teens in care.
He’ll be looking specifically at youngsters over 16, as the number of kids in that age bracket in care has shot up by 37 per cent in the last decade alone.
Speaking about his new documentary, Joe said: “Foster care is a subject really close to my heart as I grew up with foster siblings so it’s something I’m passionate about exploring.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting the young people in care and hearing their stories.’’
Joe made his name in EastEnders playing Mickey Miller for five years from 2003.
He was such a hit, bosses introduced other family members, including sibling Demi, played by his real-life sister Shana.
I’m sure she’ll be chuffed for him

Anton added: “We’re doing one of our favourite numbers. You’ll have to tune in to really see why we both love it so much, but it’s pretty special.”
The performance will be broadcast live on Children In Need, which kicks off at 7pm on BBC1.
Strictly fans are going to love it.

Scott revealed the big day is in June, after getting engaged to his partner of five years Sam Vaughan last October.
In an exclusive chat during the challenge – due to end at 8.30am today – Scott said: “Obviously, I’ve got a wedding coming up so this will help.
“We need to get a move on before it gets booked up, but we’re thinking June next year. We’re going to raise so much money for Children In Need and I believe I’m going to burn about 5,000 calories.”
Scott added: “Olly Murs loves the cake but he can get in shape so quickly. He has abs of steel today.”
You can watch highlights of Scott’s challenge on Children In Need on BBC1 from 7pm tomorrow.

Teasing the return of the ITV hit, which airs in January, Wossy said:
“There is one name in there who is someone who has filled stadiums and we were all surprised.
“When that name came up I thought, ‘It can’t possibly be that person’, but it was.”
Speaking on the red carpet at ITV’s Palooza event on Tuesday night, he continued: “We were all very excited and afterwards we were all saying, ‘How did they get that person to do it?’.”
The TV veteran also spoke about fellow panellist Rita Ora’s nonsensical gags.
He said: “She tries to make jokes sometimes and we ask her what she meant and even she doesn’t know.”
I don’t think Peter Kay has anything to worry about.
