Real Housewives exec producer Andy Cohen shared Braunwyn was fired because she “wasn’t in healthiest spot” as she was getting sober.
The Bravo host felt it wasn’t the right time for her to be on television as she dealt with “serious life stuff.”
She was on the show for a couple seasons, and the final batch of episodes documented her marriage troubles with husband Sean, her admitting she’s an “alcoholic,” as well as her coming out as gay.
After a season of big reveals and changes and then getting fired, Braunwyn shared during an interview on Addiction Talk that she had a really rough time.
The ex reality star revealed: “I was suicidally depressed a few times. And I did have to go get help once.
“This was prior, this was the first time I got sober.”
Braunwyn said she’s gone through similar feelings this time, as well.
“Since getting sober this time, I have been on the floor,” she said. “I have been depressed.”
The mother-of-seven said: When I got fired, I was very depressed. This is the first job I’ve ever had, and it was really hard for me to work through it.”
She added that she asked herself after being let go from RHOC: “Why don’t they like me?’ Why aren’t I good enough?”
Though getting fired “hurt [her] to [her] core,” Braunwyn said she “didn’t drink” and stayed strong through it all.
Despite her time on the show coming to an end abruptly, she said she’s grateful that she was able to truly open herself up on the series.
Braunwyn said: “My sobriety and my coming out were definitely intertwined.
“I had been hiding a huge part of my life, even from myself. I definitely had an identity crisis.”
On camera, she “figured out” who she was and “went through it all” during her final season.
Revealing she’s an “alcoholic” and deciding to become sober shortly before hte pandemic “saved [her] life,” she said.
Braunwyn shared: “If I had gone into lockdown drinking, I would have died.
“I would have drank myself to death.”
In October 2020, Braunwyn was seen sobbing in the Season 15 premiere of RHOC as she admitted she was an “alcoholic.”
She broke down in tears, revealing she was scared she was “going to die” from drinking before she vowed to give up the habit “forever.”
Andy later explained on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy that he and some of the other producers decided not to bring her back for the next season, hoping she would focus on her health, instead.
He said: “I will say regarding Braunwyn, I really, I really give it up to her and commend her for being so open and letting us in, especially relating to her journey with sobriety.
“She was going through some really serious life stuff on the show and she didn’t shy away from sharing it with us, which I always appreciate.
“You know, that being said, listening to her at the reunion made me and, I think, the other producers feel like, you know what, maybe at this moment in time, being on TV wasn’t the healthiest spot for she and her family.
“So, especially if you’re going through– I think she was dealing with some real, real stuff with her own, with herself, with her marriage, with her children. It was a lot.”
