The lawsuit says 54-year-old NeNe, who is Black, complained to executives about years of racist remarks from RHOA-castmate Kim Zolciak-Biermann, 43, but that only NeNe suffered consequences.
It names the defendants as NBCUniversal, Bravo, production companies True Entertainment and Truly Original, executives from the companies and Housewives executive producer Andy Cohen, but not Kim.
“NBC, Bravo and True foster a corporate and workplace culture in which racially-insensitive and inappropriate behavior is tolerated — if not, encouraged,” the suit says.
The Sun has reached out to representatives for both Bravo and Kim for comment.
The lawsuit refers to numerous examples of alleged racist incidents.
One allegation is based on a scene during the first season of RHOA, in 2008.
In the scene, Kim responds to the cast’s idea to attend a barbecue, at which NeNe will be present, by saying “words to the effect of ‘I don’t want to sit around with NeNe and eat chicken.'”
The suit claims that the comment “perpetuated an offensive stereotype about African-Americans.”
Another claim refers to a scene in 2012’s fifth season of the Bravo show.
The suit alleges that Kim made “racially offensive and stereotypical” comments about the area of NeNe’s new home, calling the neighborhood “ghetto”.
The same year, the suit claims, Kim used the N-word to refer to NeNe and other housemates following a dispute with them.
After NeNe aired her complaints to executives of the show, the suit alleges, they “did not terminate their relationship with Zolciak-Biermann, nor take any other meaningful action to put an end to her racially-offensive behavior.”
Kim, who is a singer as well as a reality star, had her own spin-off show on Bravo, Don’t Be Tardy, which began in 2012 and aired for eight seasons until 2020.
ALL ABOUT NENE
NeNe appeared on-and-off in ten seasons of RHOA between 2008 and 2020.
Lawsuit aside, her life was rocked by tragedy in 2021 when her husband Gregg Leakes died of cancer.
The reality star and the real estate investor first tied the knot in 1997, before divorcing in 2011.
However, the pair would reunite and once again walk down the aisle in 2013.
A HOUSE IS NOT A HOME
Following his death, which came after a four-year battle with colon cancer, NeNe sold the $3.5m mansion which they had shared.
The 10,000 square foot estate is nestled in a gated community outside of Atlanta equipped with a resort-style pool with a waterfall and gorgeous landscape views overlooking a nearby golf course.
After mourning the loss of her husband, NeNe was earlier this year said to be “absolutely open” to marrying again.
Nene has now found love with businessman Nyonisela Sioh.
Although their relationship is still relatively new, the couple have vacationed together, and Nene has shared photos of them on Instagram.
