While last week’s episode of Gogglebox on Channel 4 acknowledged the late royal’s death in the introductory voiceover, tonight the cast reacted to the news broadcast as they discovered what happened for the first time.
Several of the stars of the show became overcome with emotion, with Jenny Newby and Shirley Griffiths wiping away tears.
Mary also became tearful, with her husband Giles comforting her as he said: ‘Steady nutty,’ calling her by their pet name for each other.
After an advert break, when the camera returned to Mary and Giles’ home, it turned out they’d changed their clothes in keeping with the period of mourning.

‘How long are you going to be in mourning for Mary?’ Giles said, to which Mary replied: ‘I think probably a week.’
‘Yeah I think that’s… didn’t they say it was a week’s official mourning?’ Giles said.

Giles then speculated over how Prince Philip would have likely wanted to be commemorated, expressing his belief that the royal ‘didn’t want any fuss’.
‘Do you know what the best way of honouring Prince Philip, Mary? He didn’t want any fuss,’ Giles said.
‘I’m going to take him at his word, and I’m going to plant my potatoes.’
As they watched the news reporter announcing Prince Philip’s death, Jenny told Lee Riley that she was ‘lost for words’.
‘I’ll let you off this time. You can cry,’ Lee said, as Jenny took off her glasses and wiped away her tears.
‘Just reminds me of my grandfather,’ Shirley said, becoming choked up.
The Duke’s funeral is due to take place on Saturday April 17.
It will be shown on BBC One from 12.30pm, in addition to airing on ITV from 1.15pm.
Gogglebox returns next Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
