A stoma is an opening which is made on the abdomen with surgery, to divert waste out of the body and into a colostomy bag.
The much loved TV barman said he has been allowed home after six days in hospital following his life-saving op.
Sharing his health update with fans tonight, Merlin wrote on Instagram: “And breathe.
“6 days, start to finish. Now for real #cancer recovery. I’ve had open laparotomies before and the recovery was 6 weeks in hospital before robotic surgery!! Amazing. nhs #davincisurgicalsystem #bowelcancerawarenessmonth #stoma”
His pals including First Dates co-star David Marc shared supportive messages, as David said: “Fantastic! Love you merl! ❤️❤️”
Chef and friend Sabrina Ghayour-Lynn replied to his post: “Now rest up and get well xx”
And one fan said: “Glad you are up and about! 🙌 Hope the Stoma isn’t causing too many issues and you can have it reversed as soon as your healed. 👍🏼👍🏼”
The barman thanked the NHS on Twitter last week, letting his 44k followers know how he was doing.
Alongside a picture of him in bed, Merlin said: “Thank you #NHS for literally saving my life. #BowelCancerAwarenessMonth.”
Earlier this week Merlin revealed that he was in hospital to have surgery.
He told fans on Instagram: “Ready as I’ll ever be. Tumour removal time. 🥂.”
He later said: “2am. Tubes outta everywhere. Aches and pains. But no tumour,” Merlin told his 57.8k followers.
Doctors told Merlin he has a 75 per cent chance of living beyond five years back in September as he revealed the details of his devastating cancer battle.
He said he started to get pain in his stomach, which he thought was because of a car accident that happened when he was 20.
Doctors went on to discover a 4.5cm Stage 3 tumour.
At the time he told the Sunday Mirror: “I won’t let it get the better of me.”
“The tumour has breached the colon. It’s wanting to move into the tissues surrounding it.
“But importantly, it hasn’t got into the lymph yet, meaning it’s not spread.”
Merlin shot to fame in 2013 when he joined the cast of Channel 4’s First Dates.
He lives with his partner Lucile and his seven-year-old daughter Alix.
