WCW and WWE icon Sting is returning to the ring at AEW Revolution next month.
The wrestling legend – who made his name as the top star for World Championship Wrestling during the infamous Monday Night Wars before moving onto TNA Wrestling and winding down his career with WWE – hasn’t worked a match since losing to Seth Rollins at Night of Champions in 2016.
However, after returning to the TNT network – the home of WCW in its heyday – last month on the Winter Is Coming edition of Dynamite, it seems he’s now poised to step between the ropes one more time on February 27.
Making the shocking announcement on Thursday, AEW tweeted: ‘Here we go! It’s “The Machine” Brian Cage (MrGMSI_BCage) & Ricky Starks (@starkmanjones) of #TeamTaz vs. @Sting & the TNT Champion @DarbyAllin in a STREET FIGHT! (sic)’
Fans have been watching Sting and Allin’s alliance develop over the past few weeks, and now the baseball bat swinging legend is set to stand by his side against a team led by ECW legend Taz.
Responding to the news, Starks quipped: ‘Well, now it’s an even playing field’.
His partner Cage referenced Sting’s weapon of choice in his own response, but didn’t seem too concerned.
He teased: ‘Well well well, I’ve seen the warriors once or twice so team baseball furies are in some serious trouble now.’
And AEW referee Aubrey Edwards seemed excited by the news, retweeting the announcement and adding: ‘Well this is crazy’.
In a statement following Sting’s debut for the company at the beginning of December, boss Tony Khan revealed they had signed the icon to a full-time contract.
He commented at the time: ‘The surprise introduction of Sting was a great way to celebrate our biggest episode of Dynamite yet.
‘When AEW launched, I was ecstatic to bring wrestling back to TNT after a very long absence.
‘Sting defeated the legendary Ric Flair in the final wrestling match to be shown on TNT for more than 18 years until the debut of Dynamite in 2019.
‘Now, almost two decades later, it’s such a thrill to welcome Sting to AEW and bring him back home to TNT!’
And in just over a month’s time, he’ll be making his in-ring debut and marking the next stage of his incredible career.
