Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett has mentioned his bandmates James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich don’t keep in mind the primary time they met him.
Hammett joined the metallic titans in 1983, and previous to that he performed within the band Exodus.
In a prolonged new interview for Gibson’s ‘Icons’ sequence, Hammett remembered assembly the pair for the primary time when Exodus supported Metallica, an encounter his bandmates haven’t any reminiscence of.
Hammett defined: “[Exodus] acquired booked on [a] present as a result of we have been buddies with the headlining band, which was a band referred to as Laaz Rockit, and the band within the center was Metallica. And we have been, like, ‘Oh, that is cool. We’re gonna be taking part in with Metallica. That’s nice.’
“And I keep in mind once we performed that present, there was perhaps a few hundred folks within the membership. After which Metallica went on, and the place was packed. I don’t know the place the folks got here from, however hastily, they simply confirmed up.”
He added: “The following night time was a profit for Metallic Mania journal, and we acquired requested to play with Metallica once more. And it was a greater state of affairs, as a result of it was simply us and Metallica. I met these guys for the primary time within the dressing room of the Mabuhay Gardens, which wasn’t a lot of a dressing room in any respect; it was like an indoor alley.
“That was the start of my relationship with them. And it’s actually humorous, as a result of years after that, folks would ask me, ‘When was the primary time you ever talked to these guys?’ And I’d say, ‘I first met ’em on the Mab.’ And Lars was, like, ‘Actually? I don’t keep in mind that.’ And James was, like, ‘Huh? Actually?’ They don’t even keep in mind.”
Elsewhere within the interview, Hammett remembered going to see Metallica live for the first time.
“I keep in mind we have been simply sitting round sooner or later, and the singer of Exodus, a man named Paul Baloff, who was an absolute maniac, he walked into the rehearsal and mentioned, ‘Metallica. So heavy. They’re so heavy’,” Hammett remembered.
“And I used to be, like, ‘Metallica.’ And I assumed, ‘What a fantastic title. It’s like the most effective title on the planet.’ [Baloff] mentioned, ‘Yeah, they’re taking part in The Stone tonight. We’ve gotta go verify ’em out.’ And so we went down there. And actually, there was, like, 15 folks there. And I keep in mind being on the entrance of the stage going, ‘Wow, these guys are fairly goddamn good.’”
