George RR Martin’s short story Sandkings is being made into a movie for Netflix.
For anybody who is missing their weekly dose of Game of Thrones, one of the author’s most beloved works, the 1979 novelette Sandkings, is being adapted into a feature film.
Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski will be at the helm, and confirmed the project in a chat with Collider.
He said: ‘One of the screenplays [I’m working on] is based on a George R.R. Martin short story called Sandkings, which is this brilliant little twisted short story that I love.
‘And I’m working with a great writer, Dennis Kelly, who wrote the original [Utopia]… The British original series is brilliant. And Dennis is doing the adaptation, so I’m kind of excited about that.’
Sandkings follows a wealthy playboy named Simon Kress who collects dangerous, exotic animals, and one day stumbles across a mysterious establishment called Wo & Shade, where he buys a terrarium filled with four colonies of creatures called sandkings.
Sandkings grow to fill whatever environment they are kept in, and each colony consists of a large female called the maw, and numerous insect-like mobiles that she controls via telepathy, which protect the maw from invading colonies by constructing a sandcastle around her.

Simon bets on the wars between the four colonies, but soon the sandkings escape Simon’s terrarium and begin to take over his house.
The novelette was first published in the August 1979 issue of Omni, before being published in the short story collection of the same name two years later.
Sandkings, which is set in the same world as Nightflyers and Dying of the Light, was previously made into a television film in 1995, which served as the first episode of the relaunch of The Outer Limits.
It was also turned into a graphic novel by DC Comics in 1987.
Sandkings is just the latest work from Martin to be adapted for the screen, after his A Song of Ice and Fire series was adapted into the blockbuster series Game of Thrones, which ended in 2019.
Nightflyers was made into a movie in 1987 and then a TV series, which ran for one season before it was cancelled in early 2019.
HBO is set to begin production on the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, starring Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, while another sequel called Bloodmoon – which had been set to star Naomi Watts – was abandoned.
It was also confirmed this week that Martin’s short story In The Lost Lands will be adapted into a feature film, starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista.
