A suspected vigilante shot and killed a man who she accused of stealing her phone – then strolled casually away, police say. Kelsey Dampier denied the January 7 murder of Joshua Flanagan, 37, at a court hearing in Fort Smith, Arkansas, last Wednesday.
Dampier is said to have flown into a rage after realizing her phone was missing while at a house with friends earlier this month. Court papers allege she pulled out a purple .380 caliber handgun and vowed to kill whoever had taken it.
Dampier then went looking for her phone by ‘pinging’ it with an app to track its location. She shot Flanagan when she realized he had it, it is claimed. They are said to have argued briefly before Dampier allegedly blasted the bullet into Flanagan’s stomach, with Dampier said to have strolled away afterwards.
Ashley Gentry, who was mother to Flanagan’s two year-old daughter said: ‘He possibly didn’t know her at all…it supposedly was over a cell phone, and you know how people sell phones all the time. I could see him buying a phone from someone and it turned out to be hers.’
Flanagan, a father of three, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. His brother Richard was shot dead during a confrontation at a suspected drugs house in January 2020, TodayInFortSmith reported. He has previous arrests for theft and burglary.
Dampier was later apprehended by police, with a witness to the shooting picking her photo out of a police line-up, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. She has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by certain persons.
Dampier’s bail was set at $500,000, and she is being held in jail ahead of her next court hearing. Investigators have yet to say whether Dampier knew Flanagan prior to the fatal shooting.
