A woman given a Covid vaccine while pregnant has since given birth to the first known baby born with Covid antibodies in her system. The unidentified mom had a baby girl in Palm Beach County, Florida, in late January.
Doctors took a blood sample from the infant’s umbilical cord afterwards, and found the woman’s Moderna vaccine had also passed protection from Covid onto her daughter.
Dr Paul Gilbert said afterwards: ‘To our knowledge, this was the first in the world that was reported of a baby being born with antibodies after a vaccination.’ The baby’s mother is a frontline health worker who had the vaccine when she was 36 weeks pregnant.
Other vaccines given to pregnant women have passed on protection to their babies, with medics keen to see if the same was true of the Covid vaccine.
It confirms a separate study undertaken in Israel with the same goal. That saw 20 women given both doses of Pfizer’s vaccine during their third trimester of pregnancy – between weeks 29 and 40.
Antibodies were subsequently detected in all woman and their babies after the placenta was examined by doctors.
It is unclear if those babies were still in the womb when the samples were taken, with the Florida case the first known instance of a baby being born protected against Covid.
Dr Gilbert and his colleague Dr Chad Rudnick say it is still unclear whether babies born to vaccinated mothers have enough antibodies to protect them from a Covid infection.
They also said it is unclear how long those antibodies will stay in their system. Dr Rudnick explained: ‘Further studies have to determine how long will this protection last.
‘They have to determine at what level of protection or how many antibodies does a baby need to have circulating in order to give them protection.’
Government officials in the US have not yet recommended that pregnant women get the vaccine, and say it is instead up to individuals to decide whether they wish to.
Pfizer is currently conducting a trial on 4,000 pregnant women, and say they have yet to record any negative side effects of the vaccine.
The United States has now recorded 29.5 million Covid cases, and close to 537,000 deaths.
More than 111 million vaccine doses have been administered across the US, raising hopes that an end to the pandemic is finally in sight.
