Six teenagers have been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a drive-by shooting at an Iowa school that left a 15-year-old boy dead and two teenage girls wounded.
Authorities on Tuesday announced they arrested the teens after a shooting at East High School near downtown Des Moines the prior afternoon. The suspects have been named as Octavio Lopez, 17; Henry Valladares-Amaya, 17; Manuel Buezo, 16; Romero Perdomo, 16; Alex Perdomo, 15; and Nyang Chamdual, 14; all from Des Moines.
The school district has not disclosed whether any of them attended East High School.
Police have also identified Jose David Lopez, of Des Moines, as the boy who was killed. Jose David Lopez did not attend the school. He was the target of the drive-by shooting, cops said.
The two teenage girls who were shot, aged 16 and 18, attended the school and were standing in a group along with Jose David Lopez. Both remain hospitalized, the 16-year-old girl in serious condition and the older girl in critical condition. Their identities have not been released.
‘While this incident occurred outside of a school, it could have occurred in any one of our neighborhoods,’ police said. ‘The school is where the suspects found their target.’
Footage from a neighborhood camera recorded a group of five teenagers gathering near a curb when three vehicles drove by and then returned. People inside the vehicles fired multiple shots at the group.
The shooting prompted President Joe Biden to issue a statement on Tuesday night offering prayers to the families of the victims.
‘A half dozen suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the shooting, and we are grateful to Des Moines law enforcement and first responders for their quick work and professionalism,’ Biden stated.
‘But these swift arrests cannot obscure the reality that too many families have had to bury a piece of their soul after yet another tragic shooting.’
Each of the suspects was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
