Outgoing US president Donald Trump has warned that the ‘movement is just beginning’ with regards to his supporters as he prepares to vacate the White House.
Trump has been forced to concede to President Elect Joe Biden, who won the recent election.
But while he has indicated a peaceful transition, there seems to be no sign that he plans to step away from US politics.
In a farewell speech, Trump declared: ‘We must never lose this conviction. That means focusing on what we have in common.
‘At the centre of this is the expression of free speech and open debate. Only if we forget who we are and how we got here can we ever allow political cencorship and blacklisting is unthinkable.
‘In America we don’t insist on absolute conformity or enforced, rigid, orthodoxes, America is not a timid nation of tame souls who need sheltered from those of different opinions. That is not who we are or ever will be.’
He continued: ‘As I think back on the past four years, one image arises above all others, there were thousnads of people who stood as we passed. It never failed to deeply move me. They came out to show me to show their support and love for the country.
‘America is the greatest nation in history. This is the precious inheritance that we must safeguard and we have worked to get just that. I fought for you, I fought for your family, I fought for our country.
‘Now as I prepare to send power to a new administration, our movement is just beginning, There’s never been anything like it
‘I believe a nation that serves its citizens will not dwindle – as long as Americans hold pride in their country, there is nothing we can achieve. Our future will be brighter than ever before.
‘I leave with optomsitic spirit that the best is yet to come.’
