A man who was convicted of killing his pregnant wife and their unborn baby has been resentenced to life in prison.
A judge on Wednesday sentenced Scott Peterson, 49, to 15 years to life in prison for the death of their unborn son Conner. He killed Lacy Peterson, 27, who was eight months pregnant, in 2002.
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Anne-Christine Massullo ordered Peterson to serve without parole.
His sentence had been overturned last year by the Supreme Court of California, which found jurors who personally disagreed with death penalty were dismissed
Before Scott was sentenced, Laci’s mother Sharon Rocha called him a ‘coward’ and said he should admit to killing them.
‘No matter what happens, no matter what transpires in the future there are two things that will never change, Laci and Conner will always be dead and you will always be their murderer,’ she said.
Rocha detailed the last time she saw and spoke to her daughter.
‘I’ve seen no sorrow or no remorse from you at all. I know you’re going to say you have no remorse because you’re innocent, but you haven’t shown any grief or sorrow for either of them,’ Rocha said. ‘I still feel the grief every day after 19 years.’
Scott murdered Laci five years they married. Her body was dumped in the Berkeley Marina on Christmas Eve and washed ashore. Prosecutors said Scott tried to cover up the crime by making it seem as if she went missing.
A jury convicted Scott of murdering Laci and their unborn baby in 2004 and he was sentenced the next year.
On Wednesday, Laci’s brother Brent Rocha said Scot ‘deserves death’ and ‘the most severe sentence possible’.
Laci’s sister Amy Rocha choked up while saying she felt ‘cheated’ of her sister.
‘I don’t know how you go on living,’ Amy told Scott, adding he should be ‘punished in this life and after’.
