At least five people were killed and many remain trapped after a 100-car pile up during rush hour in Texas.
Officials declared a ‘mass casualty event’ after icy conditions led to the deadly pile-up on a freeway in Forth Worth, near Dallas.
The local fire department has said that multiple people are trapped in vehicles following the incident at 7am this morning.
As of 10am local time first responders had taken at least 36 people to hospital for treatment with some in critical condition, reports the Forth Worth Star. A shocking video has since been shared on Twitter showing a huge semi-truck crashing into multiple cars at high speed.
MedStar spokesperson Matt Zavadsky said the pile-up is around a mile long and said that rescue workers are still trying to reach some people trapped in their vehicles.
Police spokesman, Daniel Segura confirmed an officer was involved in the crash and was in a stable condition, he said.
Photos from the scene show vehicles – including huge lorries and pick-up trucks – can be seen strewn across the road and piled on top of one and another.
At least 24 fire units responded to the huge pile-up.

Mike Drivdahl, of Fort Worth Fire Department, said firefighters are going car-to-car looking for people who are trapped or who are in need of medical attention, reports NBC 5.
Initial details are still emerging and it is not yet known how many people have been hurt in the pile-up. Drivdahl said it will ‘take a lot of time’ for the emergency services to properly assess the scale of the damage and extent of the casualties.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midday on Thursday for much of the Dallas-Fort Worth region as freezing temperatures turns the area’s roads into icy highways.

Police have said there has been a family reunification center set up at the Riverside Community Center set up in Fort Worth and family members should go to that location to pick up victims who were involved in the crash.
