An 11-year-old boy who was struck by lightning and knocked off a boat has survived the terrifying incident.
Levi Stock was getting back from a boat trip with his family when lightning hit him at Williams Park Boat Ramp in Riverview, Florida, on June 30.
‘I was talking to his dad. He says it looked like a Mike Tyson knockout. I mean, his body just went overboard, and he began to sink underwater,’ said Fishhawk Fellowship Church Pastor Daniel Butson.
Levi was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition.
Stock’s father told FOX 13’s Chief Meteorologist Paul Dellegatto that Levi has been recovering.
‘Great news on this 4th of July! Levi Stock, the 11 year old who was struck by lightning on a boat near the dock at Williams Park in Riverview last week is doing much better,’ Dellegatto tweeted. ‘His Dad messaged me this morning to tell me that he is out of ICU and is doing well.’
A witness, Debbie Daniels, was sitting near the boat ramp when she saw a flash of lighting over the water. She said she instantly knew that someone on a boat had been hit because a woman was yelling for help and people were panicking.
‘There was somebody sitting straddling him and pushing and pushing and pushing and trying to get his heart started,’ said Daniels. ‘And I hit my knees and started praying and crying and oh, my god, it was terrible.’
There was no rain at the time of the incident, Daniels added.
‘It was beautiful, but you could hear the thunder and see the lightning in spots,’ she said.
Dellegatto said that lightning can strike seven to 10 miles away from its originating thunderstorm, ‘so even though you see a thunderstorm in the distance, if you hear thunder technically you’re in danger of being hit’.
Florida ranks first in the US in terms of lightning strikes, according to FOX 13. The odds of being struck are less than one-in-a-million each year, and nearly 90% of victims survive. However, bolts kill about 20 people annually in the country and injure hundreds of others.
Levi was hit just days after a woman and her two dogs were fatally struck by lightning during a morning walk along the San Gabriel Flood Control District in Southern California, as thunderstorms passed through the area.
