Donald Trump supporters called a black police officer the n-word 15 times during the deadly US Capitol riots, his impeachment hearing was told. Democrat Representative Jamie Raskin revealed the racist abuse the cop endured during the deadly chaos, which killed five rioters and a police officer.
Raskin, who is acting as prosecutor at Trump’s impeachment trial, told the US Senate: ‘I’ll tell you a final sad story in this kaleidoscope of sadness and terror and violence.
‘One of our Capitol officers who defended us that day was a long time veteran of our force, a brave and honorable public servant who spent several hours battling the mob as part of one of those blue lines defending the capitol in our democracy.
‘For several hours straight…he defended us and he lived every minute of his oath of office. And afterwards overwhelmed by emotion he broke down in the rotunda. And he cried for 15 minutes, and he shouted out i got called an n-word 15 times today.
‘And then, he reported, I sat down with one of my buddies, another black guy, and tears just started streaming down my face.
‘I said “What the fuck man? Is this America? What the fuck just happened? I’m so sick and tired of this shit.”‘
The abuse was revealed as Raskin presented his case against Trump, who is charged with inciting the January 6 riots with a speech to his supporters just hours before.
He and a fellow impeachment manager, Colorado Representative Joe Neguse, spent much of Wednesday laying out their case against Trump.
Neguse said: ‘(Trump) assembled the mob, he summoned the mob, he incited the mob. He knew when he ascended the podium on that fateful morning the mob had heeded his words and they were waiting to begin fighting.’
The hearing continues. Trump denies a charge of incitement of insurrection, with his lawyers set to begin presenting their defense later today.
