Donald Trump has claimed the deadly US Capitol riots he incited were caused by his ‘sacred’ election win being stripped away.
The President of the United States tweeted Wednesday: ‘These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long.
‘Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!’ Trump’s tweet – his fourth since the riot was kicked off, was immediately slapped with a warning by Twitter, which also banned other site users from retweeting it, or replying to it.
Twitter said they had done so ‘due to a risk of violence.’ The president spoke amid growing calls to remove him from office for starting riots which saw one female protester shot dead by police.
He attended a Save America rally in Washington DC on Tuesday morning and called on his followers to protest at the Capitol building while Joe Biden’s election win was being certified by Congress.
Wednesday’s riots saw protesters besiege the US Capitol building during a certification hearing for Joe Biden’s election victory
They did just that, with many also choosing to storm the building, leading to its evacuation during the ceremony, which is usually just a formality.
Trump later tweeted a video – also flagged by Twitter, and banned by Facebook, urging the rioters to go home and telling them ‘We love you.’
At least one US representative has now begun impeachment proceedings to try and remove Trump from office, while others have called for Vice President to use the 25th Amendment to end Trump’s term.
