A nine year-old boy died of coronavirus just hours after his lungs filled with fluid while he played with his toys. JJ Boatman died on Tuesday – just 12 hours after being air-lifted to hospital and put on a ventilator. He was taken to his local emergency room in Vernon, Texas, after struggling to breathe.
JJ was later diagnosed with Covid, and flown to Fort Worth for specialist treatment, with medics putting him on a ventilator. There, doctors told the youngster’s parents Priscilla and Jason Bateman that his lungs had filled with liquid, and that his brain had been severely damaged by alack of oxygen.
A GoFundMe page set up to help pay for the youngster’s funeral said: ‘He was running around playing one day and by that night he was having difficulty breathing.
‘He got flown to Fort Worth where he was placed on a ventilator and the doctor said his lungs were filled with liquid and his brain had swollen from lack of oxygen. He was very strong and hung on for more than 12 hours, but at the end Covid-19 claimed another young victim. He had just turned 9 years old earlier this month.’
JJ, who had two older sisters, was remembered as ‘always happy and full of life.’ He last attended Central Elementary School on January 22. The school closed as soon as news of JJ’s death was announced on Tuesday, with all parents, students and workers ordered to quarantine until February 1.
Covid cases have continued to surge in Texas, with 2.29million infections diagnosed, and more than 35,500 people dying as a result.
The United States has now recorded more than 25.4million Covid infections, and over 425,000 deaths.
