World leaders including UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon have spoken out to condemn the scenes of violent protests in the US Capitol, which have led to one woman being shot.
Donald Trump supporters have stormed the building amid scenes of carnage, overpowering the security staff in place and they continue to remain in the building despite Mike Pence’s call on Twitter to halt the violence.
A representative for Trump, who had initially vowed to join the protests which were launched to defy Joe Biden’s presidency transition, has claimed that the National Guard are on the way to control the situation.
Johnson tweeted: ‘Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.’
With scenes unfolding, the rest of the world has watched with Sturgeon claiming those not on the side of democracy should feel shame.

She tweeted: ‘The scenes from the Capitol are utterly horrifying. Solidarity with those in on the side of democracy and the peaceful and constitutional transfer of power. Shame on those who have incited this attack on democracy.’
Labour leader Keir Starmer said: ‘Horrendous scenes from the US. These are not “protestors” – this a direct attack on democracy and legislators carrying out the will of the American people.’
