Donald Trump’s account has been suspended by Twitter following the riots in Washington DC ‘due to the risk of further incitement of violence’.
Twitter’s official Safety account confirmed the news on Friday night, tweeting: ‘After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
‘In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action.
‘Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.
‘However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules and cannot use Twitter to incite violence. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.’
There had been calls for Trump to be banned from Twitter and Facebook and all social media accounts in the wake of Wednesday’s atrocities.

It comes after pro-Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill this week in a bid to overturn the results of November’s presidential election, which left five people dead, including a police officer.
Trump could also face criminal charges over his role in encouraging the riots, federal investigators have indicated.
Prosecutors say they are looking at ‘all actors’ involved in the unrest, which saw hundreds storm the Capitol in an attempt to stop lawmakers certifying the result of November’s election, which Trump lost to Joe Biden.

The riot came just hours after the president held a rally nearby at which he told supporters to ‘walk down to the Capitol’.
He said: ‘You’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.’
