- How to get your Metro newspaper fix
A new mortgage scheme means buying your own place just got easier… (Picture: Metro.co.uk)
Of all the announcements in last week’s budget, the one that’s bound to get aspiring homeowners chomping at the bit is the introduction of the mortgage guarantee scheme.
From April, 95% mortgages — which have virtually disappeared during the pandemic — will be available on properties priced up to £600,000 to purchasers with low deposits who pass affordability checks and, unlike when using the Help to Buy equity loan scheme, there’s no loan to repay when you sell.
According to Halifax, last year the average first-time buyer forked out a stomping £57,278 deposit, but by taking advantage of the new scheme, you could be getting the keys to a place of your own with a down payment of well below £15,000.
