Soothing natural scenes at your fingertips (Picture: TikTok/@honeybobabear)
Over the past few months you’ve probably seen the sunset lamps all over TikTok and Instagram.
The handy lights project the illusion of a sunset onto a wall, giving a room a beautiful ‘golden hour’ orange tinge – something which experts told Metro.co.uk could be helpful for boosting our serotonin levels.
But now there’s a new light hack that’s got people talking.
People are creating their own scenic views using their projectors on a blank wall – be it a tropical South American rainforest or a coastal view, the landscapes are limitless.
What’s more, users are commenting on how soothing and relaxing the projections are.
There’s no denying how pretty these incredible images look, but could this nifty hack actually be good for our mental health, too?
Wellbeing expert Jennifer McKenzie seems to think so.
She tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Research has shown that nature is great for wellbeing and mental health.
‘Even by looking at picture or video of nature, or listening to the sounds, can help us have a moment of meditation and calm – this is why spas and salons play waterfalls or natural relaxing music.
‘It has been proven that watching nature programmes on TV can uplift people’s moods and reduce negative emotions. It has an impact on humans flourishing — socially, psychologically, spiritually and emotionally.’
In fact, Jennifer says this could be the reason for its popularity in lockdown.
She adds: ‘These window scenes can bring a sense of awe and wonder.
‘This could be why this challenge is trending and proving to be so popular, as is it helping alleviate the kind of boredom associated with being isolated indoors.’
Dr Becky Spelman, a psychologist at Private Therapy Clinic, also says the projector could be a great way of creating the illusion of a window, if you don’t have one in your room (or have a small one).
Something that would make day-to-day life working from home more enjoyable.
Becky says: ‘Although you should always work in natural daylight, next to a window where you can see nature, this of course is not always possible.
‘If you are working in one room with no access to a window for long periods of time, then having a fake projector – possibly along with a lamp that emulates natural daylight – could actually benefit your mental health by lowering stress levels and calming your mind.’
So, the window projection is not only aesthetically-pleasing addition to your home, but it could actually boost your mood and improve wellbeing in the process.
TikTok has come through with yet another genius trick.
