The fire broke out at Viking Pools around 7.45pm local time, Midland County Emergency Coordinator Justin Bunch said.
Several agencies are responding to the scene, including volunteer fire departments, according to Tate Owen, Midland County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer.
The building is believed to have been empty when the fire broke out, as Bunch said employees left around 5pm for the night. No injuries have yet been reported.
Video from the scene shows dozens of emergency vehicles responding to the blaze. Dark, thick clouds of smoke can be seen for miles.
Officials are not sure what may have caused the fire, though weather conditions in the area could prevent fire crews from putting out the massive blaze.
National Weather Service Midland meteorologist Julie Phillipson tweeted that if winds shift south and the fire is not yet out, parts of Midland and Odessa could see smoke later tonight. Winds could shift and reach up to 20 miles per hour later tonight.
The National Weather Service also reports that “well above normal temperatures” have been felt across the state this week.
A record was broken earlier today when Midland International Airport reached a high of 95 degrees.
That’s a full two degrees higher than the previous record of 93, set in 1999, 1997, and 1964.
As a result, a Red Flag Warning and a Fire Weather Watch have been in effect for parts of the state this week.
Viking Pools is located in Odessa off of Interstate 20, about 330 miles northwest of San Antonio.
The situation is ongoing.
