THE GLAZERS re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo to appease Manchester United fans following criticism of the club owners, Gary Neville has claimed.
Although the ex-defender has admitted to being ‘more excited’ by his old team’s title prospects after the deal, he feels it papers over the cracks.

Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho are three big-name additions to the United line-up this summer but Neville believes the signings will be no quick fix to heal the club after a tumultuous period.
The 46-year-old told Sky Sports: “The Glazers have done what they normally do when they get put under pressure.
“They make two or three signings and basically, it shuts people up.
“I think there are deep-rooted issues at United.
“They couldn’t let Ronaldo go to Manchester City. They’ve had it in the past with the likes of [Alexis] Sanchez when he was going to Man City and they stepped in.
“They had to step in at this point, whether they wanted to or not is another matter. No Man United fan can complain with the three players they’ve got this summer.
“I made the prediction on Monday Night Football that it would finish Man City, Chelsea and Man United I’m not going to change that.
“I don’t think the Ronaldo signing makes them a better team than Chelsea, who won the Champions League last season, and Man City, who were 20 points clear.”
United fans are largely excited by the prospect of former star Ronaldo stepping foot on the Old Trafford pitch again, but pundits are divided.
While many have overwhelmingly praised the deal, there is a sense that it will not make the Red Devils overnight title favourites.
Rio Ferdinand said: “I still think that City are the team to beat.
“They have the know-how, they’ve done it, they’re the champions and they’re the team who others have got to get past.
“You want it to be interesting, you don’t want it to be a one-horse race, you want loads of teams at it going into the new year and I think we’re going to have that this year.”
Gary Lineker tweeted shortly after the deal: “Wow! Just Wow. What a signing. What a transfer window for United. What a homecoming. Love it.”
But City fan Liam Gallagher is said to have told his crowd at Leeds Festival: “The Manchester lot, you got your f***ing pants pulled down today with that one, didn’t ya?”
