WHEN it comes to remodeling our homes, many of us don’t know where to begin.
Renovations are often expensive and time-consuming, so it helps to have some expert opinions before we start tearing down walls.

Oren Farkash is the CEO and owner of South Land Remodeling, a general contracting company in Los Angeles.
Speaking with MarthaStewart.com, he shared some tips for renovating your home efficiently.
If your home renovation plans are mainly cosmetic, like painting or flooring, you may decide to tackle the plans yourself.
Farkash says that if you do, you should divide the project into sections so that your home remains livable as you work.
Jumping around from one room to another will just prolong the renovation and leave multiple rooms unfinished at the same time.
“Also, it’s a good idea to start with your highest priority,” he said, which is often the kitchen or bathroom.
“This way, if you run out of money or energy, at least you got the most important area done.”
Once you decide which room you want to start with, Farkash suggests beginning with the repairs in that room and then moving on to cosmetic changes.
“Start with messy stuff first because it will create an obvious improvement, which feels like rewarding achievement,” he said.
If your renovation plans require professional help, specialists will likely dictate the order in which those plans take place.
Still, Farkash said it’s best to go with an “inside-out approach.”
“Work your way from the inside (like mechanical features in the walls and floors) to the outside (think cosmetic finishes),” he said.
Luckily, the pros will know how to handle these complex projects and will likely get them done quickly for you.
Farkash encouraged homeowners to hire specialists if the renovation seems like a tough one, because going in the wrong order can lead to disastrous results that require expensive repairs.
“Working in a methodical way will save you time and money, and you will finish the project faster with cleaner, better results.”
