Want to enjoy a glass of red with Idris Elba?
Now’s your chance.
The Thor star has opened swanky champagne bar Porte Noire in London’s King’s Cross, and he’s hinted that he might be hanging out there himself.
We chatted to him about his champers lifestyle, why he’s a slight lightweight and
How did your new bar, Porte Noire, come about?
I’ve already got a rosé wine and champagne brand of the same name, which I started with my friend David Farber, a wine expert.
And the way I got into champagne was after being invited to the prestigious Sanger viticultural school in Champagne in 2018.
Who doesn’t want to go to Champagne?! I also wanted to impress my then-girlfriend, now-wife [Sabrina], so I took her with me.

Porte Noire’s doors will soon open at Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross
Did you know much about champagne already?
I learned a lot from that visit. We toured their vineyards and cellars, then the guy showing us around said, ‘How would you like to take home your own champagne?’ I’m looking at thousands of bottles in front of me and said, ‘mate, I don’t think I’ll be able to fit them all in my car, but I’ll give it a go!’
He said, ‘No, I meant, how would you like to make your own cuvee [blend]?’ That sounded pretty good, so Porte Noire was born.
And now you’ve got the bar in Kings Cross – was it because you wanted somewhere to hang out?
Well, I think Kings Cross has had the most incredible makeover; I’ve been going out there all my life, to places like Bagleys, back in the day, and at times it could be, let’s say, edgy!
To see what’s changed and what’s happening there now is amazing. It’s David’s bar, really, but we decided to do it together. We’ve got lots of different wines to try, and it’s a place to come and chill.
The bar will also serve a delicious charcuterie selection (Picture: Porte Noire)
So you won’t be manning the decks as your alter ego DJ Big Driis too often?
No! Maybe on the odd occasion, but it won’t be a party place. I’ve been away a lot for work lately, to Australia and South Africa, but now I’m home, so you’ll definitely see me down there, chilling in a corner somewhere.

What’s your favourite tipple?
I love rosé, of course, but if I want something stronger, I’m a whisky man; Japanese whisky always goes down a treat.
That’s a bit less strong than Scottish whisky though…
[laughs] Don’t believe what you hear about me – I’m actually a bit of a lightweight!
