So, it makes sense you want to get the most for your money, and avoiding waste is a big part of that.
Laura de Barra, cleaning hack enthusiast and author of DIY bible, Gaff Goddess, says that the way we pack our fridges can contribute to food waste, and therefore our bottom line when it comes to grocery shopping.
A recent TikTok the home influenfcer shared highlighted how a few position changes in the fridge can make our food last longer and reduce spoilage – and it only takes a few minutes to recreate.
The video details that doors are the warmest part of our fridges, while crisper drawers are designed to be humid.
The bottom shelf of the fridge will be coldest, which is why it’s important to put products like meat there. This ensures no ‘juice’ from the meat drips down, as well as keeping it at the safest temperature.
Here’s what Laura recommends placing on each of your shelves.
- Bottom shelf: Raw meat and fish
- Middle shelf: Dairy, dairy-esque such as plant milks, and cooked meat
- Top shelf: Leftovers and ready-to-eat
- Crisper drawers: Vegetables (although try to separate high-ethylene veg from ethylene-sensitive products)
- Doors: Herbs, condiments and pickles, and coffee or beauty items
Laura added in her Instagram caption: ‘It’s mainly our vegetables that rot quicker when we don’t store them correctly in a fridge. However you want to ensure your raw meat is as safe as it can be and that ready to eat isn’t toooo cold.’
The average UK household wastes over £470 of food per year, so having everything in its right place means you’re more likely to use it – and can save cash in the process.
