With summer coming, it’s salad season.
You’re probably used to starting off your recipe with some leafy greens or vegetables.
But one TV chef has made a ‘popcorn salad’ using the snack as a base – and people aren’t impressed.
American food blogger Molly Yeh appeared on her popular Food Network show Girl Meets Farm to show off her recipe.
The salad is a mix of popcorn, mayonnaise and vegetables.
Molly says she’s not the first to make it, but rather this is just her sharing the ‘popular mid-western dish’ with the world.

She says it’s usually found at a church basement potluck, but she wanted to put her own take on it.
Although she loves the dish, she admits others might be put off when they first hear about it.
She said: ‘Some people will put fish in it as well. You don’t think it’s going to work, but when you taste it, it’s really good.’
She starts by making the sauce from a blend of mayonnaise, sour cream, dijon mustard, sugar, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper.
The sauce is mixed with snap peas, carrot and chopped celery and the popcorn, coated in cheese seasoning.
Molly then garnishes with some chopped watercress at the end.
In the clip, she laughed: ‘What it looks like you’re getting a salad, but you look underneath, you see a pile of popcorn.

‘That is my kind of salad. This is the kind of salad you eat with a spoon.’
When the recipe was shared on the Food Network Facebook page, it divided opinion with one person branding it a ‘crime against humanity’.
‘She has to hide the popcorn with watercress because she can’t even fathom what she just made,’ one comment said.
Another added: ‘The only salad popcorn belongs to is a medley of butter and kettle corn/cheese flavoring.’
Someone else said: ‘I’m sorry but it really looks disgusting and I would never eat it, all that damn mayonnaise is the worst.’
Another person wrote: ‘Maybe they accidently released this early and they were supposed to wait til April 1st. This is not appetizing at all. I love popcorn and yall are ruining it’
Others from the Mid-West area said they’ve never heard of the dish.
‘Am I the only one who has lived their entire life in the mid-west and have never seen a popcorn salad? I guess I shouldn’t knock it until I try it but is this an actual staple recipe and from where?’ one said.
Someone else said: ‘I’ve been to a lot of church potlucks in my Midwestern, Lutheran, upbringing. Never, ever, have I seen or heard of a popcorn salad. Her friends from Fargo, (that is still Midwest right?) haven’t heard of it either. Our pastor used to eat popcorn for supper on Sunday’s and I promise it wasn’t in a salad.’
But there were a few people who agreed they liked the dish.
One woman wrote: ‘Popcorn salad is so yummy. I make mine a little different. I know it sounds weird but it’s so yummy. Ya have to try it just once.’
