The variety of jeans available for consumers is endless — so much so that when shopping, especially online, it can become quite overwhelming.
And when it comes to getting the right pair, there is so much more to consider than simply buying “your size”. This is why so many women end up in the wrong trousers.
Love Island’s Malin Andersson proved that this week while filming herself trying to squeeze into a pair of tight jeans on Instagram.
Here, I share my six failsafe tips to ensure you never buy ill-fitting jeans again.
Let’s start by talking bodies. Many women can be more than one body shape, but when you are choosing jeans the best thing to do is to put yourself into as few body shapes as possible.
You could be straight up and down, known as “column”, or an hourglass where your shoulder and hip are almost the same width and you go in at the waist.

You could be pear-shaped, where you are at least one or two sizes bigger on the bottom, or the reverse of that is “top-heavy”, which means that on a vertical line, your shoulders are one or two sizes bigger than your hips.
Finally there is the apple shape, where you might be slightly fuller around your waist.
Over the page, you can find examples of the styles of jeans that suit your body shape.
One of the biggest complaints I hear from women choosing their jeans is that their waist is a different size to their hips.
For example, a pear-shaped woman might find a pair of jeans that fit her on the bottom, but then bag out at her waist.

Or she might find that the jeans would fit her around the waist but she can’t pull them over her bottom.
To avoid this issue, there is one part of the jeans that will indicate how far the pair will take you in at the waist, and how much movement you will have around your bottom.
It is called the yoke — the triangle piece of material at the bottom of the waistband on the back of the jeans. The deeper the yoke, the more room for a bigger bottom to waist ratio.
It’s like a triangle, so it will hold you in at the smallest part of your waist and still accommodate your bum.
Ever feel like your size changes depending on where you shop? You are correct.
Never be afraid of sizing, or let it rule how you shop. When designing its products, every brand will use a “block”.

This is usually a piece of wood which is used as a template to size and fit the clothing that is being produced.
One high street store may have a block that looks like a size 12, but in any other store would be a size 16. It doesn’t mean you have gained or lost any weight, it just means the factory is using a different block.
As and when you purchase products from various stories that you like the fit of, keep a note of the size, rather than using an unreliable one-size-fits-all approach.
Instead of blindly shopping by size, take out your tape measure.
Every online brand will have a size chart on its website telling you which will be the correct size for your measurements.

For jeans, measure around the smallest part of your waist, above your belly button, for your waist size.
For your leg length, measure from the inside of your thigh by the crotch to your ankle.
Alternatively, if you want to find a replica fit of an old threadbare pair of jeans, measure the waist and leg before you go online shopping.
When considering the type of jeans that are best for your shape, think about the rise: High, mid or low.
If you have a very small waist then you could go for the on-trend high-waisted jeans.

These take you in at the smallest part of your waist and elongate your legs.
If you have a short torso, try low-rise jeans, which will help to balance your proportions. And if you will be tucking in a shirt or sweater, go for mid-rise. It will look super smart.
These days, thanks to stars such as Kim Kardashian and Malin, generous bottoms are highly sought after.
And you can make yours look bigger, just by changing the size of the pockets.

A simple rule of thumb is that the bigger the pockets, the smaller your bottom looks.
So if you wanted to take your bottom size down, then find a pair of jeans with large pockets.
Or if you want to enhance your bottom, find jeans with small pockets.
